King's Evangelical Divinity School
Founded in 1990, King's Evangelical Divinity School (formerly the Midlands Bible College and Divinity School based in Wolverhampton) is a non-denominational Higher Education institution providing innovative and competitively-priced theological studies by open and distance learning. We are based in Kent and all our courses are available online.
King's specialises in Hermeneutics (biblical interpretation) and our B.Th., Graduate Diploma and M.A. degree programmes are validated by the University of Chester, England. There is also a strong focus on our distinctive as an Evangelical school and King's publishes the Evangelical Review of Society and Politics, a peer-reviewed academic journal. The school also offers less demanding courses in the Bible and Theology for those leading busy lives.
Our tutors and students come from across the Evangelical spectrum and more than a third of King's students are from overseas (mainly the US and Australia).
King's Evangelical Divinity School (formerly Midlands Bible College and Divinity School) is a non-denominational, Evangelical institution that subscribes to the historic decisions of the early church councils. We hold dearly to the sovereignty of God, the Trinity and the deity of Christ, the virgin conception, salvation through Jesus Christ alone, the present work of the Holy Spirit, and the future return of Christ. We also believe in the unity of Scripture and consider the Bible as the final authority on all issues of faith and practice. This high view of Scripture underpins the ministry of the college, and all permanent lecturers and staff are in agreement with this position.
Students are drawn from across the Evangelical spectrum and the school encourages genuine and thoughtful debate, providing it is biblically-based and theologically-sound. As such, King's does not subscribe to a lengthy and prescriptive statement of belief.
While the vast majority of students come from within Evangelical Christianity, we welcome non-Evangelicals to study at the college, providing they are suitably respectful of and do not promote views contrary to our orthodox, historic and mainstream Evangelical values and beliefs.
King's B.Th., Graduate Diploma and M.A. (Theology) programmes are all validated by the University of Chester. For further details view the page for each programme by selecting from the Courses drop-down menu above.
For prospective students who are seeking specific emphases and features of a theological education, King's offers several distinctives that help set us apart from other institutions. Of course, every student is looking for something different, but if you are looking for any of the following distinctives in your pursuit of a theological education, then King's Evangelical Divinity School and its programmes may be for you.
1. Evangelical
While King's welcomes students from all backgrounds, the school is a confessional Evangelical institution which focuses strongly upon Evangelical studies and theology across all its courses. All tutors and the majority of students come from across the Evangelical spectrum. View what we believe.
However, what makes us distinctive in this regard is that King's does not seek to "push" or promote a particular Evangelical dogmatic position, whether Reformed, Dispensational, Charismatic, Arminian, or whatever. Our main focus is upon biblical interpretation (see below) and we therefore encourage students to think independently and engage theological issues critically, helping to develop and draw upon a strong knowledge and understanding of the Bible, together with advanced exegetical and hermeneutical skills.
As students progress through their studies, or for those already possessing advanced theological training, more advanced modules at King's also highlight Evangelicalism's global heritage and openness towards non-Western expressions and complimentary models of the movement.
King's publishes the Evangelical Review of Society and Politics, an international peer-reviewed journal which also serves as a potential avenue of academic publishing for more advanced students.
2. Online Learning
King's Evangelical Divinity School specialises in distance learning and online Higher Education theological studies. All our programmes are delivered through our innovative eCampus, providing remote learners with flexibility and ease of access to theological studies that a traditional taught or residential theological programme make impractical.
Distance education is also considerably more economical than traditional taught programmes, so if you are interested in formal theological training, the time has never been better to pursue and achieve that goal.
3. The Bible, Hermeneutics and Theology
King's primary focus is the development of excellent biblical knowledge, understanding and interpretative skills. Our courses focus strongly upon exegesis and biblical interpretation across all levels, exploring a range of diverse interpetative methods and results, while studies in biblical and systematic theology are closely related to each other.
Students are encouraged to utilise these valuable skills to reflect upon and engage with a wide range of theological issues explored across our courses. Moreover, King's seeks to move beyond abstract theoretical hermeneutics to include political and cultural engagement as well as practical theology and ministry, which represent essential components if Evangelicals are to respond robustly and effectively in a globalised, postmodern world.
4. Jewish-Christian Studies While studies and modules on offer at King's are varied, covering various topics and issues taught from a range of positions across the Evangelical spectrum, for those specifically seeking a Jewish-Christian focus the school offers pathways in Jewish-Christian Studies for both our B.Th. and M.A. degrees.
