Master of Science in Accounting
Grand Canyon University's Master of Science in Accounting program is designed to enhance theoretical and practical accounting skills for practitioners, researchers and educators. Those who wish to become CPAs and practice as accountants in the public or private sector, as well as those who wish to work in a management or leadership role in an accounting department may find this degree advantageous. Graduates may be prepared to sit for the CPA exam and current CPAs and accountants will be given the opportunity to advance their skills in theory, practice and research.
Coursework in the Master of Accounting degree focuses on advanced accounting, auditing and taxation practices in accordance with current rules and regulations. The principles and practices of financial accounting, as well as the fundamentals of managerial accounting, such as cost behavior and budgeting, will be studied. Students will examine why, when and how cost information is used to make effective decisions that lead a firm to success.
Students will explore the principles involved in auditing such as financial statement audits, the responsibilities of the external auditor, internal controls, the responsibilities and authority of the internal audit function, the types of audits and accounting ethics. In addition, advanced topics in financial accounting and reporting will be examined, including governmental, nonprofits, partnerships and the preparation of consolidated financial statements affected by mergers and acquisitions.
