Calvin Launches Digital Research Center for Reformation Studies

According to a Christian Newswire Press Release, Calvin Theological Seminary is launching "a research center devoted to developing digital tools, resources, and scholarship focused on the religious reformations of the early modern era, particularly arising out of the Protestant Reformation of the 16th century."  The Junius Institute for Digital Reformation Research "is conceived as a forum to promote research into the Reformation and post-Reformation periods, covering the 16th to the 18th centuries, through the use of digital tools, skills, and resources."

Online Learning Student Satisfaction

In the latest issue of the International Review of Research in Open and Distance Learning (IRRODL), is "A predictive study of student satisfaction in online education programs."  In this research the authors used regression analysis to determine that "learner-instructor interaction, learner-content interaction, and Internet self-efficacy were good predictors of student satisfaction while interactions among students and self-regulated learning did not contribute to student satisfaction."

The December 2012 issue of Digital Education Review has a number of articles related to digital storytelling that warrant attention.  The introductory article sets the stage, "This article provides a critical review of some of the most relevant studies on digital storytelling and proposes a genre typology that allows an initial classification of digital storytelling into two main types: educational and social."

Open Sourcing Textbooks

For each college student, textbook costs garner a sizable portion of education related expenses. Whether the student enrolls in an online learning courses or a traditional classroom environment, each student must acquire the textbook to complete the course successfully. Decreases in financial aide and other funding may affect how many students can afford their textbooks which could lead to a decline in students' success in the classroom. According to a case study conducted by John Hilton III and David Wiley entitled Open Access Textbooks and Financial Sustainability:A Case Study of Flat World Knowledge, Hilton and Wiley researched this open source textbook company in its beta phase to see if students would welcome open source e-textbooks and if this model could be sustained.
