Cheating and MOOCs

One of the perennial questions associated with online learning is how to prevent cheating.  Not surprisingly, the rise of Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) has given new energy to the issue.  While most MOOCs are currently taught and taken for personal development or a certificate of completion, there's a growing interest in offering them for credit or certification.  I recently saw two news items that are approaching the issue of online cheating from opposite angles.

Coursera Plans Teacher Education MOOCs

Coursera plans to expand their MOOC offerings beyond traditional university courses into continuing education courses for teachers, according to articles in the Chronicle of Higher Education and the Huffington Post.  These courses will be developed in partnership with universities and other organizations experienced in professional development of teachers.

Learndot Opens Corporate University Platform (Including a Free Plan)

According to an article in TechCrunch, Learndot has opened up its online learning platform for organizations to create their own virtual corporate universities.  To quote from TechCrunch, "Learndot is combining a course-creation tool a la Udemy with a platform for delivery, quizzing and analytics."  The pricing structure is particularly noteworthy.  A business can pay $499 per month for 150 learners, a team can pay $249 per month for 50 active learners, and anyone can get a free account for up to 5 active learners per month.

Philadelphia Virtual Academy Annouced

Philadelphia Virtual Academy Annouced

According to the local CBS affiliate in Philadelphia, the Philadelphia Virtual Academy is being launched for grades 6-12 in the upcoming (2013-14) academic year.  The Philadelphia Virtual Academy will be a free school option students in the School District of Philadelphia who will complete fifth grade by June 30, 2013.  Classes will begin on September 3rd and all courses will be delivered online.
