Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary Approves Online Master of Theological Studies

Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary Approves Online Master of Theological Studies

Earlier this month the Board of Trustees at at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary approved an  online Master of Theological Studies degree.  In addition to being a fully online degree, the MTS program is only 36 credit hours, making it "the shortest fully online master’s degree among Southern Baptist seminaries" according to the news release.

The vast majority of the courses will be taught by full-time seminary faculty.  According to the news release, the MTS will include "classes in hermeneutics, Old Testament, New Testament, church history, Baptist heritage, systematic theology, apologetics, and ethics."  The MTS is designed to be an academic degree and not a replacement for their Master of Divinity (M.Div.), which still has campus requirements as part of its degree program.

More information about the plan, along with other decisions by Board of Trustees including the elimination of faculty tenure, can be found in the Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary news release.  The online MTS will launch this summer.
