Smartphones: The New Online Learning Tool

Since the revolution of the smartphone,  college professors and students are discovering its power to aide classroom instruction. Professor D. Kirk Richardson of Virginia Commonwealth University enhanced his lecture on Edgar Allan Poe by using his smartphone to access documents, pictures, and other pertinent materials. According to an article in The Washington Post, smartphones help connect college professors and students outside the classroom and provide instant access to information for class discussions.


According to the article, several colleges and universities are researching how to incorporate smartphones into the learning structure of the university. Smartphones allow students to access their textbooks through e-reader applications, continue class discussion through social media sites, and keep their lecture notes organized. Many universities are creating their own smartphone applications to help connect students to their classes and professors, and some of these universities are providing mobile devices to their students for coursework.
