Pearson, a major force within the academic publishing world, announced the purchase of EmbanetCompass for $650 million.  This move continues Pearson's expansion from a publishing company into a learning services company.

To quote from Inside Higher Ed, "Blackboard and Pearson join the burgeoning list of entities aiding the legions of colleges that are hustling to move their academic programs online to either sustain or expand their enrollments and tuition revenues."

According to this same article, EmbanetCompass is the largest "enabler" of online programs for non-profit institutions while Pearson sits in fifth place.  This purchase would put Pearson solidly at the top of this field.  For more information, including a chart listing these enablers, read the article at Inside Higher Ed.
