Online Learning: Changing Higher Education

On Tuesday, members of the Association of Governing Boards of Universities and Colleges met to discuss the future of higher education. During this conference, several speakers emphasized the need to expand online learning in the university system. According to an article in The Chronicle for Higher Education, online learning helps reduce spending and promotes higher student achievement in university.


According to the article, Carol A. Twigg, president of the National Center for Academic Transformation, advocates that universities must redesign their traditional instruction methods to accommodate online learning. Online learning has proven to reduce costs which appeals to the governing boards and could help increase student graduation rates. Ms. Twigg's organization assists universities through the process of redesigning their courses for online learning, and she believe that resistance to online education is holding back the university system from moving forward in this technological age.
