With the rise of social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter, many colleges and universities are rethinking their online presence to attract more students. In an article written for The Washington Post, Jenna Johnson examines how BU's currently utilizes online and social media platforms. With a "7.5 percent increase in enrollment," Boston University has successfully attracted more students online through its improved social media presence.

Virtual Classrooms: The New Face of Education

 

Each new school year brings new classes and new teachers or so thought Naomi Baptiste according to an article in The New York Times. This North Miami High School senior was a bit surprised to learn that she had been placed in a virtual classroom or e-learning lab. E-learning labs are computerized classroom which provides the student with a computer and facilitator to assist with technological difficulties. According to the article, Naomi is among thousands of high school students who are taking general education courses through virtual classrooms or e-learning labs.

Community Colleges Replace Printed Textbooks with Online Library

 

As many states face budget shortages, the state of Washington proposes innovative approach to cut education spending and integrate more online resources in the community college classroom. According to an article in The Chronicle for Higher Education, Washington state lawmakers are asking one simple question: “Why require students to buy expensive textbooks every year, when the Internet is awash in information, much of it free?” Lawmakers estimate the transition from expensive textbooks to the new course materials culled from the internet's free resources would save millions of dollars. Resources for the more than 81 courses covered in all of the community colleges would be capped at $30 per course. Thus, costs for materials would be lowered and money saved. According to this article, Cable Green, e-learning director for the Washington Community College system, declares "we believe we can change the cost of attending higher education in this country and in the world.”

Liberty Outranks in Military Chaplain Enrollment

 

With an emphasis on patriotism, Liberty Baptist Theological Seminary has outranked other seminaries in training new military chaplains according to an article in The Christian Century. According to the article, "One out of every five Air Force chaplain candidates studying at an evangelical seminary is enrolled at Liberty."
