Mobile Usage Growing

A telephone survey was conducted by Princeton Survey Research Associates International among 2,252 adults ages 18 and older. The survey showed a growth in the usage of mobile devices among adults since last year. 


Electronic Book Readers Prohibited By ADA

The Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Department of Education (DOE) sent out letters to colleges and universities regarding electronic book readers.  Due to not having a text-to-speech function, these devices are "not accessible to students who are blind or have low vision."

Some students in a second-year Spanish class at the University of New Mexico have been able to experience learning in a whole new way. They have been able to learn through an educational game called Mentira, which mean lie in Spanish.


Voice-over Presentations

Joshua Kim, a senior learning technologist and an adjunct in sociology at Dartmouth college, has been using Jing in his classroom. Jing allows you to create voice-over presentations in PowerPoint. Instead of having his students give live oral presentations, he has them make voice-over presentations with Jing. 


The use of e-textbooks might not be big in nonprofit universities, but it is being widely used in for-profit colleges. Both online for-profit colleges, American Public University Systems and the University of Phoenix, have been using e-textbooks for a number of years. The law school at Kaplan University assigns 80% of their reading through e-textbooks. "In for-profit education, more than any other sector, the traditional book is becoming obsolete."

Due to the growth of online education offered by colleges and universities, Neely and Tucker conducted a research to find out the hidden costs of unbundling faculty roles. This cost is often overlooked when planning to develop an online course. The research is a bit limited because it was conducted on one course in one college.


Improving Learning Outcomes with Wikipedia

Wikipedia has always been seen as the number one source to stay away from when writing research papers. Yet it is the number one source when it comes to finding information. What most people don't know is that Wikipedia is examined by volunteer academics. All information must be cited. There is no room for "original thought" when it comes to writing a Wiki article. According to studies, Wikipedia is as accurate as the Encyclopedia Britannica. 


Providing Audio Feedback on Student Writing

If you write an essay for this professor, chances are you won't receive much feedback written on your paper. That's because most of the feedback is giving in the form of an audio file. Billie Hara, Assistant Professor of English at Texax A&M University, has adopted the method of audio feedback on student writing.


Mary Arnold of Learning Solutions Magazine has provided some questions that designers should ask when creating  Web 2.0 training. Similar to a classroom setting, the online learning environment requires some guidance and facilitation. In order to create a collaborative learning environment, Arnold highlights the following key questions:

1) Can learners participate in the learning environment at their own level of expertise?

2) Will each learner have a lot of opportunities to participate?
