The results of the " 2010 Sloan Survey of Online Learning" showed that “5.6 million students” college and university students took an online course “during the Fall 2009.”Most those who took an online course were enrolled in a community college. Online classes have been steadily gaining in popularity especially at community colleges. In an article on the U.S. News University Directory, community colleges are offering more online classes to meet the growing demand.
According to “Pew Research,” more than half of all “undergraduates” attend a community college, and many take online classes. With this new emphasis on online classes, community colleges can better meet the spike in enrollment. To help with the cost of online classes, community colleges like “Highland Community College in Washington State” have received grant money to encourage more online courses. HCC began an “online continuing education program” that focused on small business development. The online course credits can even be applied to an “online small business certificate” at HCC.
