Online Charter Schools: A New Education Option

Posted by: Sarah

In Southern California, Knightsen schools are reviewing a proposal that would create an online charter school within Contra Costa county. This online charter school will be accessible for all students regardless of the student's residency. According to an article on MercuryOnline.com, the new online charter school will give Knightsen students another education option that focuses on technology and flexible learning models.

According to this article, Knightsen's school trustees have mixed feelings concerning this online charter school. Some of the trustees worry that younger students in the online charter school will not have enough social interaction with teachers; however, students are required to communicate with their teachers daily through e-mail and other online technologies. Advocates for the online charter school see the potential of this new education option. An online charter school could offer more advanced placement courses and a wider choice of elective classes that the Knightsen school district and other like it don't have the funds to offer. The online charter school proposal will be voted on April 13, 2011.
