New Federal Agency for Educational Technology?

According to The Chronicle of Higher Education and the journal Science, President Obama is planning to propose a new agency within the U.S. Department of Education to develop and promote educational technology.

The Science news article states, "the president's 2012 budget request will call for the creation of Advanced Research Projects Agency-Education (ARPA-ED). The name is a deliberate takeoff on the Sputnik-era DARPA within the Department of Defense that funded what became the Internet."

More details will apparently be released later this month, but the ARPA-ED proposal is found in the "Create a quantum leap in educational technologies" section of Strategy for American Innovation: Catalyze Breakthroughs for National Priorities available at the White House website.
